Tell Me About Masking

It is not our role to encourage children to mask/not mask but let’s support them by providing a safe and trusting place for them to be their true authentic self & have their needs met.

Masking & occupational therapy

What Is Masking?

Masking is when an individual may suppress or camouflage their natural self and differences

Masking may use a lot of mental energy and the exhaustion from it can lead to poor mental health outcomes.

Examples of Masking

  • Forced eye contact

  • Not having sensory needs implemented (eg no movement breaks for child who seeks vestibular or proprioception input)

  • Withholding stimming

  • avoiding talking about ones own interests

Reasons For Masking

  • To avoid being bullied or judged by others

  • An attempt to fit in and adjust to 'social norms' and 'expectations'

  • Hiding natural self to please others

  • Attempt to make friends

  • To feel a sense of belonging
