THE EIGHT SENSES - Most people are familiar with the 5 basic senses. Did you know there are in fact 3 additional senses? -
Vestibular system- This involves movement, balance, stability and posture. Individuals who seek vestibular input may enjoy being upside down, linear movement (side to side/forwards and backwards) or angular movement (spinning).
Proprioceptive system- This involves sensations from joints and muscles, body awareness and sensory positioning. Individuals who seek proprioception input benefit from “heavy work”. Heavy work is activity that requires effort/active resistance from our muscles and joints. This usually involves pushing or pulling against the body.
Interoceptive system - This involves recognising internal senses and feelings from within your body. For example, the awareness to go to the toilet, identifying needing a drink when you are thirsty, taking off your jacket if you are feeling hot, or perhaps the body not feeling pain or feeling it intensely.
There are four different sensory patterns.
1. Sensory SEEKERS (require additional sensory input)
2. Sensory AVOIDERS (register sensory input intensively and actively avoid the situation)
3. Sensory SENSITIVITY (register sensory input intensely but do not always remove themselves from the situation)
4. REGISTRATION (meaning they may not register or may miss sensory input)
