Our job is to support them to build the FOUNDATION skills by providing them with positive strategies.
We cannot expect them to self regulate if they do not yet have the skills.
Give them the chance to build these up overtime.
Strategies
Having a calm presence (body language volume/tone of voice)
Acknowledge their emotions and feelings
Validate their experience
Physical comfort or space (depending on the child's preference)
Supporting sensory needs
Not giving advice and problem solving whilst they are heightened
Modelling positive regulation strategies (EG deep breathing, calming object, offering a hug)
